Messy rooms are a first-world problem brought on by too many possessions. We give gifts to children thinking that it will make them happy (and they do, for a while), but then they just add to the pile. When I was exploring Minimalism right before the Covid shutdown, I was struck by the thought that we admire people who are happy even when they have so little--what if they are happy BECAUSE they have so little? They don't have to spend so much of their lives putting away, organizing, and dealing with STUFF. Embracing minimalism came just in time for me, because Covid ended our business and forced our retirement (good thing we were at retirement age already), but we were ready to live on less income. Buying less saves a lot of money. As for our grandchildren, our financial advisor helped us open accounts for each of them, and instead of gifts, we put the money in there. As they graduate high school, we have been able to give them that money to start them off in life.
