My husband is at extreme risk for dying from Covid-19 if he gets it. He can't breathe with a mask on. He barely breathes easily without a mask. He practices social distancing, which is the best and most he can do. We both take natural food-based supplements, including Vitamin D. We grocery shop in-store, go to meetings with others in our senior age category, and thank God, despite his CML leukemia, he is doing very well. A little common sense goes a long way toward staying healthy.

Thanks for providing an opportunity to read this timely article. I believe that this virus that has not been isolated, has been the opportunity of a few individuals, with evil intent, wating on the sidelines, to get the power and control that they crave.

With few (and maybe no) exceptions, federal, state and local governments throughout our nation install stop signs at intersections and impose laws restricting our freedom to drive past those signs without stopping, even when there is no other vehicle in the vicinity. But in my entire life I have never heard of a single person, let alone an academic, protesting the government's encroachment on our divine freedoms with such signs and laws. But in a health crisis that has taken the lives of over a half million of our citizens in the past one year alone, we criticize our governments for trying to stop the carnage if it means requiring masks? Why not tell the government to take down all the stop signs and let individual drivers decide if they are going to stop at intersections or not, especially if no other cars are coming?

Thank you for this article. As someone from the UK , our rights and freedoms have already gone. We are not allowed to protest freely and our government is passing laws left right and centre without debate while Covid19 emergency powers hide what is going on. We have not be able to attend church for over a year. We are praying.

In Australia, we went early and hard with lock down. With some exceptions it has worked. Our compliance rate has been very high and we have had few deaths and within our bubble we have enjoyed a near normal life style for most of the last year. We are only just starting a voluntary immunization program but there is no panic. We had an election in our state of Western Australia and the existing government swept the polls because of their management of the pandemic. There is only a very small number who oppose how things have been managed here in Australia

I find this article a bit disturbing as it doesn't mesh with my personal experience. I live in Alberta, Canada, and there has been a very definite correlation between government mandated restrictions and lowering of cases, hospitalizations, and deaths. Our government leaders tried encouraging citizens to act in accordance with recommendations without imposing restrictions, but far too many people say "If it's legal I can do it." Even with mandated restrictions there are a few who refuse, but enough complied to make the restrictions effective.
As far as masking goes, I have never understood why this would be considered a violation of rights and freedoms. I have family in health care, including a front line ER doctor, and I think it is a pretty established truth in medicine that wearing a mask helps prevent the spread of a lot of things. Do you really want a surgeon working on your body with the entire medical team unmasked?
I realize different people have different experiences, but the "facts" presented in this article definitely do not align with my lived experiences.

Will truth prevail? I dont have those credentials but have felt this way from the beginning. I dont feel the mask issue was completely explained. Is a cloth mask of whatever material really a safety precaution, whatever the circumstance?

From a non scientific, but highly educated practitioner in my own field.....too many so called experts giving differing opinions. Politicians either banging their own drum or trying to juggle conflicting opinions while trying to keep their respective economies going. TOTALLY insane conspiracy theories.....(thanks for sharing the love America.)...and a media on both sides of the pond seemingly doing their utmost to muddy the water and frightening the life out of people in the process!
Just what, exactly are people supposed to think?

Dr. Atlas, you are a ray of light in a darkened world. Most of the people that I am able (during the shutdown of America) associate with agree with your science and comments. Rationality and civil discourse has been limited and supplanted by politics and crowd hysteria. It is, unfortunately, history repeating itself.
