Most, if not all representative assemblies in this country have procedures in place that allow the citizens to recall elected officials who are not doing their duties or who are not in keeping with community standards. The citizens of this community and others with similar situations ought to be petitioning for recall elections for each offending politician. If they allow these people to continue in office, they are inviting other abuses of power, since the underlying ideals of the offenders will not change.

Hmmm! And, I thought there was just one congresswoman who spoke out and disliked this country so much from Minnesota! Sounds to me like the good, sensible people of Minnesota and elsewhere need to start making their voices heard in the town halls of this state and be move vocal and stand up for the flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, and this country and its principles and values before "those" people with their noise and publicity are the majority voice! God bless America!

I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands; one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. If that’s offensive to you. leave. In fact, if you’re concerned that someone might be offended by that pledge, leave. And that means YOU, even if you’re one of the bureaucrats. No one needs you, and the pledge says nothing about allegiance to bureaucrats. Bureaucrats are a necessary evil at best. Our allegiance that we pledge is to the UNITED STATES, to the flag that symbolizes our unity as a society, and to the republican political order as it was conceived and executed by our forefathers and sustained by those who were martyrs for that cause. If that isn’t what you want, leave. Some of us have had just about all the nonsense from you that we can tolerate. It matters not at all if you don’t agree with every policy or every procedure, but if that is the case, and you would rather not leave, at least try keeping your mouth(s) shut for a change and stay out of the newspaper. You’re disturbing the peace. I join with those blowing back.

No one is required to recite the pledge if they individually choose not to do so. In my elementary school, there was a girl whose religious affiliation suggested that she not participate. She simply stood quietly during the pledge, and didn't receive any negative feedback for nor participating.

If anyone is offended by the pledge of allegiance to this country, then, as someone already stated, they should return to the country from which they came. A citizen here cannot have allegiance to another country. If they do, they cannot and should not be trusted to stand up for this country when it becomes necessary. I certainly would not want such people as my neighbors.

Regarding the city council who voted to forego the Pledge of Allegiance at their meetings: The councilwoman who was pushing for the pledge to be eliminated said it might "scare" people away. Well, if they're going to be scared away by a strong country that offers liberty and justice for all, they certainly were misguided when they came to the U.S. All those council members who voted for this change should be voted OUT. As should many other groups, organizations, and people across the country -- and especially those who run our schools -- who have chosen not to include the Pledge of Allegiance as part of their daily routine. It's bad enough that "God" has already been removed from so many aspects of American life. But this is kind of the last straw because it is against both God and country. Our country is a gift to us from God. It is the great place it is (despite its problems) and we have what we have (the ability and right to solve those problems) because of God's blessings and protections. The folks who push for these kinds of disrespectful and ungrateful initiatives are, brick by brick, dismantling God's protection over our country and making us vulnerable to the same problems experienced in the less prosperous, less tolerant, less happy, and less secure countries in the world -- the same countries from which our foreign visitors and new citizens are fleeing. I believe think these visitors and new citizens would be thrilled to hear such a Pledge of Allegiance, counting it as confirmation that they have truly come to a better place. It is a shame, then, that our own citizens simply take it all for granted. Taking something for granted is like daring it to disappear -- to disintegrate bit by bit when we aren't looking. With initiatives like this one, we should not be surprised to turn around someday and realize that the God-given blessings and protections we have as a country have disappeared. Who or what will we pledge allegiance to then?

Seems to me all elected officials need to remember who they work for. They are there to represent we the people. And if you can’t/won’t do that, you need to step down.

I totally agree with Ms. Auclair. If someone is offended by The Pledge, just leave the room when it’s being said & then come back in! It’s getting to the point where being in the majority means nothing.
