With the COVID restrictions, the Church history sites are locked up. Temporarily gone are the eager families able to visit the Newell K. Whitney store in Kirtland or Nauvoo’s Social Hall. Yet, the Church, ever innovative in its approach to difficulties has come up with a winning solution.

You can visit these sites on a virtual tour with missionaries on Zoom right from your own home. Because my husband and I are serving at the Joseph Smith Birthplace, we have seen first-hand the power of these virtual tours. During the COVID lock down, we have hosted visitors from all over the world on these tours, including many who will likely never travel here in person.

Virtual tours have been great for families, Young Women/Young Men groups, Relief Society Activities, and Institute/Seminary Classes. The 2021 Come Follow Me Curriculum is Doctrine and Covenants which features these sacred sites. The Joseph Smith Birthplace Virtual Tour shares some short, pre-recorded videos which show the birthplace, the monument, and the Solomon Mack Foundation because many of the tours are offered after sunset and at locations far removed from the visitor center. There is also a live portion which highlights the visitor center and includes time for questions and answers. The typical tour is 50 minutes but can be shortened for seminaries and institute classes.

The historic site directors have reported visitors ranging up to 30,000 a month on these virtual tours.

Here’s a complete listing of sites and how to sign up for these tours—and, of course, don’t forget where it all began at Joseph Smith’s birthplace.
