The leaven that Christ referred to in Matthew 16:12 is false doctrine. We should always verify what we are taught (in GC, teaching manuals, and wards) in the light of the His Word. This will prevent people from following and worshipping a false god. If it not based on the scripture, then quickly extract this leaven of Satan before it gains traction in you.

Everyone with any serious spiritual experience has almost been sifted several times. The secret is in the management of perception--matched against our own learning experiences. And the injection of the Spirit which quickens our mind. It is sometimes not given readily. I spent some time a few years ago examining closely the writings of Marvin J. Ashton. I think he understood these things as well/better than most.

Thank you so much for this very inspiring article! With one grandson on a mission now, and another soon to leave, this gives us such a head start on how to address such a problem, should it come up. The grandson now on a mission had a particularly difficult companion to begin with, and it almost affected his desire to continue his mission. But the Lord has been merciful to him, and with a wise Mission President, he has had companions who have given him the love and strength which he now is using as an AP to help other missionaries. Thank you for your wisdom, and willingness to let us learn from your experiences!
