I think the first step to knowing God is to stop referring to him as God. The Savior asked us to refer to him as our Father in Heaven or Heavenly Father. To me to refer to Him as God is to distance myself from him. He remains this CEO of a company that I work for who is untouchable. Someone whom I dare not approach or attempt to know on a personal level. I would feel constrained to do my duty and hope he approves. But if this CEO is my father who implores me to draw close to Him and know him as my father than that is a completely different dynamic. One that will help me in time of need and will help me to strive to become more like His Son.

Thank you for this article. You put into words some of the thoughts I have been pondering for the past 3 years but haven’t been able to express. I have felt about God my whole life much as you did. I knew He was a God of love but I was also terrified to mess up for fear of “not making it”. It wasn’t until my husband died suddenly three years ago that I have truly started to come to know God and my Savior. Your article has been another witness to me of what I’m just starting to understand.
