In the temple we are twice admonished to avoid all evil speaking of the Lord’s anointed. But it seems that a significant contingent of Latter-day Saints think there is an exception to that warning that goes: avoid all evil speaking of the Lord’s anointed, unless they deserve it. Hurling the charge of racism at anyone you don’t understand, or don’t like, or disagree with has become de rigueur today. I think it’s an ugly sign of the times and unbecoming of a disciple of Jesus Christ. “Cursed are all those that shall lift up the heel against mine anointed, saith the Lord, and cry they have sinned when they have not sinned before me, saith the Lord, but have done that which was meet in mine eyes, and which I commanded them” (D&C 121:16). Did the Lord command Brigham Young in the matter of the priesthood ban? President Kimball thought so. And so do I. I appreciate Daniel C. Peterson’s defense of Brigham Young.
