An array of thirteen noteworthy concerts highlight March’s Temple Square Concert Series, including a military band, pianists, choral groups, organ competitions, and a symphony.
Unless otherwise indicated, concerts will be in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square and begin at 7:30 p.m. Reflecting standard concert protocol, children under eight years of age are encouraged to visit other venues.
Saturday, March 1—The Temple Square Chorale, under the direction of Mack Wilberg, will present Haydn’s “The Creation” in the Tabernacle.
Saturday, March 1—The Regimental Brass, composed of career soldier-musicians from the
U.S. Military Academy Band, will perform their concert entitled “Americans We–A Musical Portrait of a Nation.” The Regimental Brass is a chamber ensemble from the Academy Band, the premiere musical representative of the U.S. Army.
Wednesday, March 5—University of Utah and Brigham Young University senior performance piano majors will perform works by Debussy from their 2003 Utah Bachauer “Music in our Schools” program. The second half of the evening’ s program includes solos from university professors, the American Piano Quartet, and a solo by Dr. Paul Pollei.
Friday, March 7—The University of Utah Concert Chorale, under the direction of Dr. John M. Cooksey, will sing a program of varied works from a wide range of choral composers.
Saturday, March 8—The Brigham Young University Concert Choir, under the direction of Rosalind Hall, will sing a program of works from a wide range of choral composers.
Wednesday, March 12—Prominent American pianist Anne Koscielny, will perform Sonata in A. Major by Haydn, Three Etudes by Debussy, two works by Chopin, and Sonata No. 6 in A Major, op. 82, by Prokofiev. Koscielny is an active recitalist, orchestral soloist, chamber musician, and lecturer, and has performed throughout the world.
Friday, March 14—The American West Symphony, under the direction of Joel Rosenberg, will perform Smetana’s Overture to The Bartered Bride, Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. Rosenberg, well-known locally, has conducted the Utah Opera, the Grand Teton Music Festival, and the San Francisco Ballet, among others.
Saturday, March 15—BYU-Idaho’s combined choruses of 225 singers and symphony orchestra of 97 musicians will perform in the Tabernacle the newly-commissioned religious oratorio “Vision of Light and Truth,” by Dr. A. Laurence Lyon, and conducted by Dr. Kevin Brower. The 70-minute oratorio focuses on the continuum of visions from the beginning to the latter-days that God has used to communicate to man.
Tuesday–March 18—The two nationwide finalists of the annual Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Artist Organ Competition, held this year in Salt Lake City, will perform between 10 a.m. and noon, one organist beginning at 10 a.m., the other at 11 a.m. Interested attendees may only enter the Assembly Hall prior to or following a student’s competition performance.
Wednesday, March 19–A Recital for the winner of the annual Music Teachers National Association Collegiate Artist Organ Competition will be held at 9 a.m.
Friday, March 21—Augusta, Georgia’s nationally prestigious Davidson Fine Arts School Chorale, composed of advanced vocal students from grades 9-12, will perform in concert. The chorale, directed by Dr. James Dunaway, will sing selections from medieval, renaissance, and baroque periods, in addition to works from the 20th century.
Saturday, March 22—The Orchestra at Temple Square, under the direction of Barlow Bradford, will perform Mahler’s Third Symphony in the Tabernacle.
Wednesday, March 26—Student pianists, ages 11 through 18, of the Salt Lake Area of the Utah Federation of Music Clubs, will perform their annual Honors Recital. The recitalists represent the finalists of nearly 1,600 competitors.
