The Venezuelan women’s fencing team is 2/3rds Mormon! Both Johana Beatriz Fuenmayor Choles and Maria Gabriela Martinez Gascon are LDS and competed in London over the past week.
Martinez is a 29 year old right-handed fencer. She represented her country in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Summer Olympics. She competed in the women’s individual epee on Monday. She lost her first round to German’s Imke Duplitzer.
Fuenmayor is 33 years old. She began fencing when she was ten years old. She competed in the Women’s foil, and was defeated 4-15 in the second round.
Venezuela sent three women and three men to fence in the Olympics. The country overall sent 69 athletes to London to compete. Thus far the country has earned one gold medal- by fencer Rubn Limardo. It was the first gold medal for the country (in any sport) in 44 years.
