PROVO, Utah – Vocalist Jenny Jordan Frogley was named New Recording Artist of the Year and walked away with a handful of additional awards Friday evening (Sept. 26), as the Faith-Centered Music Association presented its tenth annual awards to people who are making a difference in the LDS music market.

Frogley, who was also named Female Recording Artist for 2007, has been singing for years on other people’s albums. She produced her first self-titled one this year. It won in the contemporary album category, and a cut from it, “Peacegiver,” won the award for contemporary song. She performed the song as part of a fast-paced program that saw 37 Pearl Awards given out in record time.

The venerable Mormon Tabernacle Choir won the award for sacred album for “Then Sings My Soul” and tied for Group Recording Artist with the Nashville Tribute Band. Cherie Call was honored as Songwriter of the Year and for her holiday song, “I Just Knew.” Alex Boye was named Performing Artist, and Sam Payne was named Male Recording Artist. Tyler Castleton was the winner in both Arranger and Producer categories.

Staci Peters, chair of the FCMA Board of Directors, said the submissions received this year “represent the broadest range of styles we’ve ever seen in our industry.” New categories were added in order to recognize excellence in devotional, motivational, singer-songwriter/folk, children’s, and contemporary inspirational.

“It’s very satisfying to see how much the borders of faith-centered music have expanded in the past 10 years to encompass such diversity,” she said. “We have more exceptional music to celebrate than ever before.”

In addition to spotlighting the best new music, the Pearl Awards noted the passing of composers Merrill Bradshaw and A. Laurence Lyon and presented posthumous awards to their widows.

Performances between sets of awards offered a glimpse at the variety of styles in this year’s submissions. Performing, in addition to Frogley, were vocalist Cherie Call, folk band Joshua Creek, women’s quartet One Clear Voice, Jason Deere (representing the Nashville Tribute Band), and a classical piano/cello duo, Marshall McDonald and Steven Sharp Nelson.
