  • More Thoughts on the Capitol Breach

The following first appeared in Public Square Magazine.

I grew up in the deep south in the 1960’s in a family where I was taught that God loves all of His children equally – black and white, male and female, young and old. As a pre-teen young man I saw the low-quality snowy black and white TV news images of numerous civil rights demonstrations. Almost universally the announcers condemned the demonstrators as lawless criminals who were breaking all of the social and legal norms of society and had to be stopped.

Invariably these demonstrators were outnumbered by police and military personnel who at times seemed to attack the demonstrators without any obvious provocation. What I saw on the videos simply did not correspond to what I heard from commentators – so over the years I have learned to carefully consider discrepancies between what I see and what I hear. …

  • Elder and Sister Soares Experienced Mild Cases of COVID-19

The following comes from the Church Newsroom.

Church spokesman Eric Hawkins released the following statement on January 8, 2021:

Elder Ulisses Soares of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles and his wife experienced mild cases of COVID-19 during the holiday break. They were both at home, away from other Church leaders, and were able to completely recover before returning to full activity.

  • Finding Personal Healing Through Service

As we start the New Year, I’ve been reflecting on a couple of personal experiences that taught me a remarkable principal.  The first involved my beautiful daughter, Jolanta.  We had adopted Jolanta from an orphanage in Lithuania. Jolanta was completely paralyzed from the chest down. She had been the victim of such terrible child abuse that the state had removed her from the care of her mother.  As a result of this abuse, she had become an elective mute, as her self- protective way of withdrawing from the world.

When Jolanta arrived in our home she was nine years old. It was so heartwarming to see how the ward received her. Many came to visit her, even though she never spoke to them or acknowledged them.  Many brought her gifts that they thought would help draw her out, things like craft projects and beautiful new clothes and toys. Nevertheless, progress …

  • VIDEO: Do you know what God envisions for you?

There are two eternal truths embedded in just the first few sentences Moroni said to Joseph when he first visited. The Lord knows our names and He has a work for us to do. Do you know what that work is for you?

  • How Near Is the Second Coming?: What Prophets Have Said Recently

The Second Coming has been on my mind since I started reading the newspaper at age ten or eleven. Our local paper was doing a countdown to the Second Coming a man in our community had predicted. I woke up that day with apprehension and anxiously asked my mother what I should do. She said, “Well, go make your bed, eat breakfast, go to school, come home, practice, help me make dinner, go to sleep, and get up tomorrow.” Ever since, I have been unruffled when someone predicted a precise date for the Second Coming.

What do you think? Is the Second Coming close enough for a countdown or will the Savior come in your great grandchildren’s future? Whatever you think, President Henry B. Eyring is correct: “Every day, we are approaching closer to the glorious moment when the Savior Jesus Christ will come to earth again” (www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/general-conference/2020/10/35eyring?lang=eng).

  • Your Hardest Family Question: How do I take back my husband who abandoned me for six months?

    Question

My husband of 26 years left me right before COVID hit hard. He completely abandoned me. There were no calls or texts for six months. I filed for divorce and he got served and started (with a fight) spousal support. Two payments later he’s now been back for a few months. He says it’s a midlife crisis (he’s in his early 50s). My question is how and what do I do now? Our 27th wedding anniversary is coming up soon, so should I get him a gift? I say I love him, but I’m broken. I don’t even know if I can stay with him. I’m trying, but I’m still just devastated. Do you have any recommendations? I’m losing it.

    Answer

You’ve been through some serious emotional and relational whiplash the past year and it’s important for you to get some stability so you can map out your …

  • In Honor of David Whitmer’s Birthday, First Look at New Feature Film “Witnesses” Released

David Whitmer, one of the famed Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon, was born on January 7, 1805. In honor of his birthday, the filmmakers behind the highly anticipated feature film WITNESSES announced the release of the film’s first trailer and key art.

“WITNESSES is the most significant and ambitious film dealing with the early history of the Church and the translation of the Book of Mormon to ever be released on the big screen,” stated Brandon Purdie, president and founder of Purdie Distribution. Purdie Distribution is managing the nationwide theatrical release of the ground-breaking film.

“While many people know some of the Three Witnesses’ story, we created the film with the goal of reaching a broader and younger audience to share this incredible story of faith,” stated Russell Richins, the film’s producer.

For nearly 200 years, skeptics and critics have attempted to explain away what Whitmer, Oliver Cowdery …

  • VIDEO: President Ballard’s invitation to pray for the United States has new relevance

The following is excerpted from the Church News. To read the full article, CLICK HERE.

Speaking to a crowd of 12,000 in Worcester, Massachusetts, in October 2019, President M. Russell Ballard encouraged his listeners to pray for the United States, its leaders and families.

The invitation from the Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles has new relevance one day after the House and Senate certified the electoral vote in the United States on Wednesday, Jan. 6. The U.S. Capitol was locked down as protesters clashed with police. Protesters breached the Capitol in the riot that left one dead, shook lawmakers and damaged government property.

“My dear brothers and sisters, our nation was founded on prayer, it was preserved by prayer, and we need prayer again,” President Ballard said in 2019. “I plead with you this evening to pray for this country, for our leaders, for …
