Becky Douglas, the founder of Rising Star Outreach, has written regularly on Meridian, about her work with the “least among us”. These are the leprosy-affected and their children in India. For those who think that leprosy disappeared long ago, it may be a surprise to know that this ancient disease continues to wreak havoc on those who have it, as well as their families. Rising Star Outreach is a nonprofit organization that lifts people from the stigma of leprosy through medical care, quality education and community development.
Before Rising Star entered the picture, children of the leprosy-affected had little hope. The workplace shunned their parents so they lived on begging. Most doctors wouldn’t treat them, and it was largely thought the disease had come upon them as a punishment from God. Now, said, Becky, “Many children have been able to go school, not only to learn, but also to dream about a brighter future.” Many children who once had no chance of even attending school have gone on to graduate, attend college, and pursue careers in their chosen fields. This is a miracle.” They now can actually have a future.
Our daughter, Laura, has been moved by the plight of the leprosy-affected. Since Rising Star Outreach is always looking for new ways to help fund their programs in India, they are literally taking aim at new heights this September and our daughter will be right there.
On September 14, daring humanitarians will go Over the Edge and rappel 5 stories down the Podium Building in Lehi, Utah to raise funds. Meridian Magazine wants to be a part of this amazing event and so our daughter Laura, is the brave family member who will shed her fear, don safety gear, and walk down the outside of a city building! How thrilling! The most exciting part though is the chance to lift others in India through monies raised. Laura needs your support! All proceeds go directly to Rising Star Outreach.
