Bill Fortune is a cartoonist, artist, graphics designer, and history buff. After spending nearly 45 years in advertising as an Art Director/Creative Director, he spent the last 15 years on the corporate side of business. In March of 2014 he retired and moved to St. George, Utah.
Bill entered he Marine Corps in 1959 and was able to do some creative work with the Public Information Office after spending two years in the infantry. He began his advertising career after leaving the Marine Corps and studying at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles and USC film courses in LA. During his career he has worked for national advertising agencies in Los Angeles and Orange County California.
In the past, his advertising work has won him national recognition such as an Andy, a Clio and a number of local advertising awards. After the loss of a son-in-law to a drunk driver Bill volunteered his talents to the MaDD organization and received national recognition for his posters and creating the designated driver program. But his first love is cartooning and he is always looking for opportunities to spend more time doing that.
The cartoon “Elder’s D & C” were originally created when our son Doug served his mission in Tampa Florida, and they were drawn and put in the bottom of our letters to him as he would write back with stories that inspired new concepts. Then years later Meridian Magazine put out a call for cartoons and I revised them to fit the computer format. We lost Doug 12 years ago and I do these today as a tribute to him. Elder “D” is a characterization of Doug, Elder “C” his first companion was named Carroll but I never knew what he looked like so I made him up. But the title is derived from their initials.
Bill and his wife Jocelyn are members of the Bloomington 2nd Ward, in St. George Utah.
