Red Algae Living in Battery Acid: Genetic Engineering in Action?
A super hardy red algae thrives in an Iceland sulfur hot spring because of special genes.Genetic analysis of red algae that lives in extreme environments such as sulfuric acid-rich hot springs and toxic metal-loaded mine shafts shows genes that seem to have been copied from bacteria. This “horizontal gene transfer” process is the same method used by genetic engineers to move genetic material into or out of a cell to become part of a modified DNA code. A well-known example of these techniques has been splicing the human insulin gene into the genetic material of the bacteria e coli so it can produce genuine human insulin for diabetics.Red alga Galdieria sulphuraria can live equally well in Iceland’s sulfur-laden hot springs as well as mine shafts loaded with arsenic and toxic metals such as mercury. Researchers at Oklahoma State University and Heinrich-Heine-Universitat in Dusseldorf, Germany made these surprising discoveries …

“The Infidelity Formula”
Contrary to popular wisdom infidelity is a potential danger for most all couples. What concerns me is the lack of awareness regarding how easily a “good person” gets from “That could never happen to me” to “I can’t believe this has happened to me!”
In my counseling practice working with couples and seeing the interactions of people all around, I see a few key things that good people are doing that can have a devastating effect on their marriages and their lives.
To make it easier to remember, I have created this formula for infidelity: Vulnerability + Opportunity + One Dumb Decision = The Slippery Slope to Disaster.
Let’s go through this step-by-step.
Vulnerability
Vulnerability to infidelity can be based on a variety of things, such as:
- Dissatisfaction in marriage
- Addictions of any kind
- Depression or other mental health issues
- Financial pressures
- Stress
- Low self-worth
- Drug/alcohol use
- Lack of mental,

Zion’s Youth in Latter-Days

When 300 teenagers crowd into an LDS cultural hall in Las Vegas, Nevada, after a full day of seminary, school and homework, you’d expect them to make some noise. What you might not expect, though, is for the noise they make to sound so beautiful. But, for the 300 members of Zion’s Youth Symphony and Chorus (ZYSC), accomplishing the unexpected is…well…expected, and making beautiful noise is expectation number one.
Founded in 2003, the group was originally comprised of a small string orchestra, which performed mostly in LDS chapels and stake centers around the Las Vegas valley. Fast forward a decade, and ZYSC-now made up of approximately 100 symphony members and 200 chorus members-performs twice each year at the world-class Smith Center for the Performing Arts to sold-out crowds. (The famous $470 million performing arts center, which opened in 2012, has seating for 2,050 in its main theatre).

Why LDS People Should Network (And How To Succeed)
In my professional life, I’ve come to be known as an avid networker. I am also strongly active in the LDS Church. For me, these two facets of my life are strongly intertwined. There is never a question for me as to whether I’m wearing my businessman’s hat or my “church hat”. My religious beliefs are at the very foundation of who I am as a person. So the hats will always be one and the same.
I have come to be known as someone with a strong professional and personal network. (Some have even referred to my connections as a “billion dollar network”.) My wife, Linda, refers to be as “the human Internet”.
I take great happiness in the amazing connections I’ve gained over the past 40-plus years. My ability to network has become a strong skill, to the point that I’ve been acknowledged in the press and am …

Unstable As Water

Unstable as water or steadfast and immovable? What kind of person do you choose to be?
An old Chinese fable demonstrates the meaning of being unstable and being steadfast.
A man travelling through the country came to a large city, very rich and splendid; he looked at it and said to his guide, “This must be a very righteous people, for I can only see but one little devil in this great city.”
The guide replied, “You do not understand, sir. This city is so perfectly given up to wickedness, corruption, degradation, and abomination of every kind, that it requires but one devil to keep them all in subjection.”
Traveling on a little further, he came to a rugged path and saw an old man trying to get up the hill side, surrounded by seven great, big, coarse-looking devils.
“Why,” says the traveler, “This must be a tremendously wicked …

Washington Post Blog: What Motivates Mormon Missionary Momentum?
Mormon missionaries teach woman in Ghana. To read the original Washington Post piece on the escalating numbers of Mormon missionaries, click here.
Over the weekend, President Thomas S. Monson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced that more than 80,000 Mormon missionaries are now serving around the world – an increase of nearly 22,000 (half of whom are young women) from a year ago, when age requirements for missionaries were lowered.
In a commentary this week at the Washington Post’s “On Faith” forum, Michael R. Otterson, the Church’s managing director of Public Affairs, notes that this excitement for missionary service may seem strange to those unfamiliar with Mormonism or religion in general. “Why would 18- and 19-year-olds be willing to put their lives on hold for up to two years,” he asks, “at a time when their peers are working through college …

Filmmaker Brings Inspiring True Story of Missionary Hostages to Theaters

Writer/director Garrett Batty has crafted one of the best films to ever emerge from the Mormon cinema movement, in large part because it tells an amazing story that will move audiences of all beliefs. The Saratov Approach, about the real-life 1998 kidnapping of Travis Tuttle and Andrew Propst while these served as LDS missionaries in Russia, is an expertly-made, powerfully-acted tale of survival, courage, faith, and compassion (read my review here . It is now playing across Utah and will be released in Arizona, Idaho, and Nevada on October 25. I recently had the opportunity to discuss the making of the film, its accuracy, and its uplifting messages with writer-director Garrett Batty.
JONATHAN DECKER: I read that you’ve wanted to make this story into a film for years, but wanted to give Andrew and Travis time to heal and be ready to tell their story. For how long has …
