L. Marlene Payne, MD, went to medical school and did an internship in internal medicine at Northwestern University in Chicago. She did a two year residency in adult psychiatry and a two year fellowship in child psychiatry at Georgetown University in Washington, DC. She then had a private practice in psychiatry in McLean, Virginia for thirty-six years. During that time she treated hundreds of missionaries for the Church of Jesus Christ. She received the highest award given by the American Psychiatric Association, Distinguished Life Fellow. She is married, has three children and four grandchildren. She is an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She is currently a temple worker and has a calling in Relief Society.
