In a new video from Mormon Channel, Sister Christina B. Franco, second counselor in the Primary General Presidency discusses the importance of embracing our differences and understanding that we all have something unique to contribute in the world and in the Church.
She shares that when she was young her father was a watchmaker and the wheels and cogs within a watch make a compelling metaphor for how many different pieces can work together to accomplish something important together.
“Each wheel is a part of a whole. Every single piece in a watch works in accordance to the other ones…they all need to work together and to be in balance,” Sister Franco says, “we are like those little pieces…we can work with each other, strengthening each other and helping to keep a perfect balance.”

Me too. I am grateful to recent movements, interrelationships with Jewish officials, and with the updated hymnal project. (I am hopeful that hymns may reflect a greater gospel width and cultural diversity. I was amazed when attending a Presbyterian funeral how directly many of their hymns connect with old testament.) I would like to see reflections of other cultures bring in greater exhuberance and passion (think Gladys Knight) at least in auxillary functions. I personally get a little weary of organ organ organ for everything; other instruments can reflect great spirituality too. Like harp once in a while. The book All Abraham's Children wakes a person up to the fact that we pull everyone to an Ephraimite culture (Britt and Scandinavian, largely) instead of widening out to the others of other parts of the world.

Oh how I wish that all our leaders would embrace this. Far too many of the people of my race feel maligned and not included. Oh how I with that this message would permeate.
