What a funny article. I enjoyed it immensely. We have some oil purists in our ward and you can always tell they are around because they smell of odd things. Seems like the same people trying to peddle the same old snake oil and trying, once again, to supplement their income off the gullibility of others. Common sense people, common sense....

LOL. It's too bad how silly these oil supporters sound right now. It's a JOKE, people! She's being funny! LAUGH! It's hilarious! Margaret - you columns always amuse and entertain! THANK YOU!!

LOL! This is just awesome. You are my favorite funny lady in Meridian.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience. Essential oils are quite potent, and it sounds like you weren't using them properly. They can work very well when used correctly. Although humorous, I hope this article will only reinforce the need for essential oils to be treated as judiciously as any medication, and not dissuade anyone from wanting to try them.

I'm so sorry you haven't had great experiences with essential oils. Unfortunately there is advise to take them internally among some of the oil companies. I am studying essential oils and one of the first things we learn is to not take them internally. Only few times, under a doctor's supervision, is that ever recommended. Essential oils ate hydrophobic, meaning they don't mix with water so it won't dilute them. Using water for a room spray works great. Otherwise it needs to be diluted in some sort of carrier oil. Yes lavender can be used neat usually, but not recommended for young children. Always dilute in carrier oils for them. Especially the first time being used.

Wow. I see ALL the reasons why your "experiment" (rightly called, seeing as you had no idea what you were doing, but only following one person's advice) went wrong. Essential oils do not "dilute" or "clean off" with water. Water increases their potency. You should never use essential oils on anyone, especially children, BEFORE "testing" them on the person first. Just as we all have a unique finger print, we all have unique physical bodies, and our reactions to anything from doctor-prescribed antibiotics to essential oils will greatly depend on how our own body accepts or rejects such things. Modern medicine, I've been told by three separate professional doctors is nothing more than a guessing game, going by symptoms. Natural healing, when done properly, is anything BUT guessing, as the person administering is usually very well educated and researched on the uses and applications. You should NEVER just take one person's advice without research it YOURSELF. Essential oils work much better than "modern medicines" without any side-effects if you know what you're doing. But if you have no idea what you are doing (such as spraying a mixture of peppermint with water!!!! REALLY???) then you're better off not using them at all. Seriously! I think this "guru" was out to get you, if indeed she gave you those directions. Anyone that knows anything about essential oils would have told you "No!!! Stop!!!" before administering the oils in such a way. You are knocking something that God has given us to use, while not being educated in it whatsoever, and encouraging others to diss that natural remedy, while they know nothing about it either. That's BAD, unmannerly, unethical, and ignorant. Essential Oils work miracles.... just as God intended them to. But you have to do your homework first to understand them. You didn't do that. So it went south. Because of YOU. Not because of the oils.

You should have been warned. Every person reacts differently to Essential Oils. Before using one for the first time, a person needs to smell it to see if it agrees with their body, then proceed cautiously till they know it can be comfortably used. Some are stronger than others and need to be mixed with a carrier oil first. Only if you really know what you are doing should you take any internally - maybe. If you realize that these are very concentrated and need to be researched as to use, you find that they can be very beneficial and safer than some of the drugs out there with their many side effects. Don't give up, just get more information.

Funny story but I'm sorry you had to experience this! Fortunately, my experiences have been better with them. We rely solely on natural methods to treat our ailments - nutrition, oils, herbs, and homeopathy (which is very a very different thing than most people think it is). However I do know others who have had similar experiences. I think it comes down to lots of study, prayer and experience - really, just as with anything worthwhile. If you're not able to invest the time, it's nice to have a good doctor you can trust. If you are though, from my experience, the Lord blesses us with many "hidden treasures of knowledge" and a satisfying feeling that we, as mothers, are able to care for our families, just as we've done for thousands of years. Best of luck to you in your healthy endeavors and thanks for your article:)

Sorry, but Jehovah certainly liked essential oils. Over 1000 references in the Bible, including the holy anointing oil in Exodus. You can rely on the arm of flesh all you want. We have become healthier by following the principles of nutrition and health from our scriptures. I really don't care for the precepts of men. Modern medicine has its place, and it needs to stay in its place - primarily trauma care and other true emergencies. Other than that, let's take responsibility for our body and learn what our scriptures teach us about health and nutrition. Work with the divinely designed body, not against it with poisons.

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience! It sounds like the "guru" was trying to mix homeopathy (diluting in water and spraying) and oils. I've received training with essential oils and one if the first things I learned is that you don't use oils and water together, because it intensifies the effect. Spraying peppermint in the face for relaxation sounds ludicrous too! So please don't totally write off essential oils because of one person who didn't know what she was doing! If you ever want to try again, search for somebody who is CARE (Center for Aromatherapy Research and Education) Certified, and make sure the oils you are using are pure, therapeutic grade. The lavender burning on unbroken skin makes me think it was not real lavender.

:-) Too true!!! And FUNNY!!! I love essential oils but.. they don't always work, they can really alienate our family & co-workers with their "wonderful" scents & they truly are NOT a quick cure. But, I'm with you, I have HOPE and have found a few oils I'm sticking with. Awesome Read!! Thank you!!!

Sometimes Mormon women get on a current trend and think it is part of the Gospel. Usually it isn't.

My experience was somewhat similar. My grown up son was visiting with his family. He always was the one who was sickly as a child. He had a terrible head congestion and getting on an airplane the next day. We thought he could breathe some of the essential oils, and so we steamed for him some of the ones suggested. He woke up a few hours later not looking like himself. His face was twice the size it should be. We started cold compresses, and by the time he got to the airport his daughter said he was beginning to look like her dad again. :) I really would like them to work, but but but.....
