Thank you--absolutely crucial. Gratitude for freedom and our Consitution are key. Recently I heard a teenager telling her younger siblings that there was absolutely nothing special about this country. I wanted to say, "well then why have so many other countries tried to adopt our Constitution?"

Yes, David, things have never been perfect and many advances have been made over time. However, to me, it seems that there is a move away from decency, civility, brotherhood, and God that has made people unhappier. Until we, as a society, repent and come unto Christ we will never achieve the society for which so many people yearn.

The only thing I disagree with in this article is the depiction of the 2 political parties. One party’s platform is exactly the same. Not one thing is different from the fifties or sixties. The other party has radicalized beyond description and is responsible for destroying our institutions, our moral code, and nearly everything I hold dear. All this in the name of social justice. These 2 words make me shudder. Our constitution guarantees equal justice to all its citizens. It does not guarantee a different justice because of the color of your skin or your identity group, perceived or otherwise.

I was raised during the depression, spent 20+ years in the military, and dearly love this country with all it problems but with hope for its future. During President Obama's run for the president he said "If elected I will fundamentally change this country" and so he did. Now can we find someone who can fundamentally change it back?

Interesting. Here's the America I knew when I was a kid. Black kids had different drinking fountains and couldn't eat in the same restaurants that I could. On the sitcom the Honeymooners, Jackie Gleason would clench his fist, raise it in a striking position and say to his wife, "I oughta knock you to the moon." And everyone would laugh. Pedophilia by clergy was common and accepted. The crime rate was much higher than it is now. The rate of illegitimate births was higher than it is now.

YES! With all my heart, mind and soul. Let us keep our American Mission Statements in front of us as an example for us as Citizens of the USA. Let us teach, show and live them to our family, to our neighbors and demand that our educators and politicians uphold those American Mission Statements. "America is one of the greatest 'ideas' in history...the idea that you and I are created equal...the idea that life is not meant to be endured, but enjoyed...this country was the first to claw it way out of darkness and put that on paper..." from Bono's Georgetown speech. The fact that America/Americans have not always lived up to the ideals on which the nation was founded does not disparage the ideals, but attests to the frailties of mankind. Many who view America through the lens of negativity have not travelled to other countries and seen the abject poverty, oppression, brutality and hopelessness endured by our fellow human beings. America has never been and will never be perfect, but freedom has given us the power to work to do better. Gratitude will grant us the ability to appreciate what we take for granted.
