Insightful analysis, but I am surprised you mentioned nothing of the Gadianton robbers and their total infiltration of the government and usurpation of power by secret combinations. Indeed that was the condition of the Nephites when Christ was crucified and all the destruction before His appearance. As we look forward to the coming of the Savior again it appears that secret combinations or political cabals and the usurpation of power thereby is front and center.

Remember...this is happening throughout the world, not just the United States. The United Kingdom is almost falling apart.

The Book of Mormon definitely has lessons for our day concerning our political process. Our country was founded as a covenant nation and has almost no resemblance of that today. It’s disheartening and hard to watch our government in full corruption mode. Thanks for this well thought out message. It rings very true.

Awesome warnings from the book of Mormon and your writing so well expressed for our understanding...A light of truth... THANK YOU !

Thank you for this insightful, clearly written and balanced article. The Book of Mormon despots are terrific examples of the kind of people to avoid, and the heroes in the Book of Mormon are ideal example of all the qualities we should look for not only in our friends but also our leaders.Thank you for pointing them out. Indeed, we citizens are under the obligation to seek leaders with integrity, honesty, civil speech and of course truthfulness. Otherwise we will have to suffer the consequences.

Thank you for posting this, Maurine. Truly, an excellent analysis of our current situation that has been growing in our country for decades. And so many people do not understand, or refuse to see, the reasons the people of our nation (and, indeed, the world) are in this mess. It is because of a refusal to follow the instructions on how to live our lives, given to us by our Lord, through his prophets.

One of the most nefarious influences on our liberty is the buying of political influence - the impact money is having on a candidates’ ability to become popular as well as the role that money has in the writing of our laws. Thank you for this article. We cannot hide our heads in the sand or simply “take care of our own.” As the joke goes, “We have seen the enemy and it is us. “

I've used scriptures when speaking of politics - I won't tell you what I've been called!

Oh, my goodness! You have really hit the nail on the head with this article. I look forward to sending it to dear friends not of our faith who share the same values as we do. Thank you for this gift!

Thank you for such a powerful and timely article that so well articulates the dangers of wicked leaders as warned by the Book of Mormon. We will carefully study all your references again and take them to heart.

Thanks for a timely reminder that we must not put partisan loyalties ahead of principles and integrity. Corruption is corruption and must be called out and condemned - even where it involves our top leadership. The use of denigrating and demeaning language for those who bring this corruption to our attention is part of the problem.

Very insightful article. It's such a difficult problem, because it seems there are few righteous choices - men and women who have the interest of the country and not themselves as their motivator. My family has very divided thoughts on this subject, and I dread Thanksgiving. Maybe we families can show the leaders how people disagree in a civilized way. I still have to come back to "Who will most likely defend my core, precious beliefs?" We're counting on morally corrupt people to carry out a holy work. God Bless America...

God Bless the Proctors and thank you Maureen for such an insightful and full rekoning of the Book of Mormon state of our civilization. A nation cannot be free and reject God simultaneously. It never has and never will happen. The great and immortal Thomas Jefferson said,"We hold these truths to be self-evident that ALL men were created equal." That would be interpreted in opportunities and under the Almighty not characteristically."These are the times that try men's souls, the summer soldier and the sunshine patriot shall in this crisis shrink from the service of his country. But he that stands it now deserves the love and thanks of man and woman." And so Thomas Paine, that great revolutionary man so stated in yes, 1776! May God truly bless America...before its midnight...

We indeed live in very dangerous times. As the consummate historians Wil and Ariel Durant wrote, "A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within." American used to be a nation of law, faith, courage and compromise. We are devolving to a nation of lawlessness, pride, raw selfishness and take-no-prisoners politics. There is still hope, as Elder Ballard has asked us to pray for our nation, but I fear we are rushing over a cliff as a nation where the Constitution is being shredded and the rule of law being replaced by kangaroo courts and congresses.

Thank you, Maurine Proctor, for this interesting assessment based on Book of Mormon accounts. As I read your well-written article, I thought of another scripture that gives us cogent advice about choosing our political leaders: Doctrine and Covenants 98:10...………."Wherefore, honest men and wise men should be sought for diligently, and good men and wise men ye should observe to uphold; otherwise whatsoever is less than these cometh of evil". This reader interprets "men" to mean---honest, wise and good men and women.

These are times that do call for courage, faith, and taking a stand for truth, even at great personal sacrifice. Thank you Maurine, for reminding us of patterns of evil and the ancidote of keeping covenants. Our prophets have been pleading with us all my lifetime to be involved in what is going on in the public square and to be awake and look to the Lord and not the philosphies of men. WE, the people, united in righteousness are the answer to preserving our freedoms which are fast disappearing as we speak. Thank you for your example of righteous political activism, Maurine.
