Great article, Brother Matthews! Thank you for reminding us what we should learn from the Martyrdom of Joseph Smith. I hope we will all live for our faith.

I believe what Elder Kahola is referring to is when the Prophet was being held in Liberty Jail in Dec 1838-April 1839. This was several years before being held in Carthage Jail where he accepted his impending death.

Elder Kahola, Joseph didn't WANT to die, he wanted to live and did everything he could to live. But he was willing to die for his faith rather than deny it. That is what the Martyrdom is about.

If Joseph Smith accepted his death while in prison why did he ask Porter Rockwell to come and rescue him from prison?

My favorite part of Elder Holland's talk is this: "For 179 years this book has been examined and attacked, denied and deconstructed, targeted and torn apart like perhaps no other book in modern religious history—perhaps like no other book in any religious history. And still it stands. Failed theories about its origins have been born and parroted and have died—from Ethan Smith to Solomon Spaulding to deranged paranoid to cunning genius. None of these frankly pathetic answers for this book has ever withstood examination because there is no other answer than the one Joseph gave as its young unlearned translator." What got my attention was the surprising reference of "frankly pathetic answers!" That's the harshest and also the most accurate description of the willfully ignorant enemies of the truth who attack the Lord's true church.
