11 of 17 prophets and additional apostles have clearly stated that fish is a healthy option and should be utilized. Brigham Young made a statement that people were confusing the subject and made an attempt to simplify it. Brigham Young “…But we can eat fish…Fish is as healthy a food as we can eat, if we except vegetables and fruit, and with them will become a very wholesome diet. What hinders us from surrounding ourselves with an abundance of those various articles of food which will promote health and produce longevity? If it is anything, it is our own neglect; or, in other words, which will answer my purpose better, the want of knowing how.” - Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses Vol. 12 Necessity of obeying counsel, April 6, 1868 Position: President of the church

Thanks forth ought and insights! Hey, I don't know if this is on your radar or not, but the comma between “should not be used” and “only in times of winter” was added in 1921. Removing the comma significantly changes the meaning of that sentence. Here is a recent blog on the subject which I found interesting and worthy of thought/investigation at https://measuringdoctrine.com. Only in times of famine

Really appreciated this article. In the studying I've done, I've learned that all meats, whether organically raised or gain fed, still pose health risks. Whereas plants do not, yet they offer the same nutrients our bodies need. I love the idea of not having to kill an animal if I don't have to. And we just really don't have to. Over the years, I've become much softer to the idea of even fishing. Putting a worm on a hook even. If I have a choice, I choose not to. Eating a plant based diet that science recently promotes, is more inline with my personal beliefs and has made this recent change in my life, one I feel good about on many levels. Science is always slow to catch up to the Word of Wisdom....but when it does, it always makes me smile. In my quest for a diet that won't change every year with what is or isnt good for u, I have found that if the diet fits the Word of Wisdom, I will always be on the right track. As much as I have enjoyed EATING fish (not killing it myself), I enjoy far more not contributing to the problems of overfishing our oceans, not taking a life, as well as the added health benefits of keeping the pollutants out of my body altogether. An excellent article, Jane. Thank u for always turning it back to us to pray about and gain our own witness of what the Lord's will is in our lives.

Making blanket statements regarding red meat(beef) being harmful and cancer causing is both uninformed and irresponsible. If you had done your homework you would discover that grass fed & finished beef is very high in omega 3 FA's. Have you researched the prevelance of Mercury in many fish species and warnings that pregnant women should limit consumption of such? Please get your facts before you get onto your soapbox!

What would really be interesting is to read the individual application and interpretations Elder Bednar and the other 11 apostles plus the first presidency have come to. It's one thing to say, go figure it out for yourself, it's quite another to have a whole host of General Authorities who obey the Word of Wisdom,,as they've come to understand it, who could share their examples of practical application of righteous living.
