This topic has been of great interest to me. I had come to the conclusion; also, that prosper in the land did not necessarily reference wealth. Here is another scripture that has the same “antithetical parallelism” where prosper in the land is to be warned to flee . . . to defend themselves
Alma 48:15
15 And this was their faith, that by so doing God would prosper them in the land, or in other words, if they were faithful in keeping the commandments of God that he would prosper them in the land; yea, warn them to flee, or to prepare for war, according to their danger;
16 And also, that God would make it known unto them, whither they should go to defend themselves against their enemies, and by so doing, the Lord would deliver them; . . .

Oh, thank yo for this! This is a phrase that has troubled me for many years. We try to be as faithful as we can, but finances have always been tough for us. We squeak by, barely. However, we have a large family, our kids are faithful, and we have joy every day. THAT, I realize, is real prosperity.
I can stop feeling guilty about these phrases in the BofM, that we're doing something wrong because we have shabby couches, and old vans, and peeling paint.
