Agreeing with you, I think of Christ's admonition to "Be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." John 16:33. The original definition of cheer (Middle English) is from Old French chiere 'face', from late Latin cara, from Greek kara 'head'. The original sense was 'face', hence 'expression, mood', later specifically 'a good mood'. Thus, I believe that Christ is urging us to put a good expression on our face. Though we may feel burdened or troubled, we should (as when we fast) present a smile and hope to others.
