I’m surprised to not see the step for restitution if we have caused harm…so far as we are able. This is absolutely critical! If you have stolen, then replace or return. If you have caused verbal injury, then apologize and perhaps more. Listen to the spirit for guidance on what/how to restore. Without restitution to the best of our ability, there isn’t genuine repentance. This reminds me of the old argument of “faith vs works” Both are part of the equation!

One of the best ways to make the Savior's Atonement and Grace real in our lives, and to experience His healing, is through working the steps found in "Healing through the Savior: The Addiction Recovery program 12 step Recovery Guide." These steps, and this program, are not only for addictions...although we are each addicted to something to help distract us or make us feel better about ourselves...it guides us to Jesus and through Him to heal whatever might be our mistakes, or mis-steps, or our poor choices. He helps us heal from hurt from others or any "God sized" hole we may have in our hearts. An awesome resource found in our Gospel Library app!

Guilt is very difficult to discard if you continue to see or experience the consequences of your actions. I would challenge that some of your examples are mistakes not sins. Someone who was scammed of their life savings should be treated with extreme compassion not guilted or shamed. And no matter how “repentant” they feel the consequences may punish them for years.

Confessing our sins to our Bishop or other Priesthood authority is also very hard. I still wonder to this day if I remembered and confessed all of them from so many years ago.

Thank you for your article. I know people who even when they have done everything to repent , having spiritual experiences, personal inspirations, going to the temple, church, serving missions, etc. they can't let go of the past. They don't forgive themselves. How can they obtain the assurance they are good and get peace of mind ?

Succinct and positive. Well worth the read. Thank you JeaNette Goates Smith.

JeaNette, great insights. (1) I really appreciated your comment about Satan telling Adam and Eve to "run, hide." While fully applicable to how we should NOT deal with sin, it is also equally applicable to many men (and some women) who don't want to deal with interpersonal conflicts in marriage or at work. We need to "avoid the avoiding"and do the truly important and hard work often needed in relationships. (2) You made me laugh with your fig leaf comment. No, the fig leaf just doesn't cut it! We need the coat of skins - the atonement and power of our Lord to protect us and keep us warm.
