How wonderful to reach the age of 106. I remember meeting Patriarch Eldred Smith in SLC.in 1969 such a great spiritual man. I thought his father was Pres.Joseph Fielding Smith?

Patriarch Eldred G. Smith visited Saskatoon Sask. Canada in the mid 70's when my husband was the district president there. He had been sent by the first presidency to give patriarchal blessings to people in that district. He came to our home for dinner and upon arriving threw off his coat and tie and got down on the floor to play cars with my 2 little boys! I was deeply touched by this sweet action from such a great spiritual giant! We felt his spirit and closeness to the Lord for many days in our home! What a sweet memory of a dear man!

I remember a picture of Eldred G. Smith in my father's missionary album when I was a child--a memento of his German mission in the later 1920s. ( My father, who was born in 1905, died in 1991, at the age of 86). I learned that Elder Smith was a descendant of Hyrum Smith and would someday be called as a Patriarch of the Church (which indeed happened in 1947). As a historian, I cherish having been a modest witness of living history.
