History is a different country they do things differently there.

Every time I see someone condemn Brigham Young or the apostle Paul or anyone else for opinions they held in their lifetime, I think about the fact that those people are still alive in the spirit world. Surely they feel heartbroken about the limitations of their understanding when they were alive on earth and are so grateful when we correct the errors that they made (as we will be when our great-grandchildren fix our blindspots!). Let's apologize for what we've gotten wrong, make the necessary changes, and move forward with energy to fix the damage done! Thanks for this article.

Thank you for this article. I agree with Andy Schow, "very timely and important." I hope more will read this and be enlightened or perhaps at least reminded about these differences of antiquity.

Thank you for sharing this information. It was very helpful to me and helped to be more educated and understanding of past history in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints as well as our world.

Many persons who have fallen from the Church have done so because of presentism. They fail to realize the different situations motivating our leaders and other Saints 200 years ago from what we are experiencing today. As one example, it was not unusual for a young woman to marry at 15. Modern Saints condemn this practice because it is no longer common. But to truly understand the situation of women at that time, we need to be aware of the differences between our times and theirs in this respect, which is grossly unfair to all who lived in the past under different expecetations and circumstances.

Thank you for this beautiful article. We have much to learn from history in its proper context. But the mobs destroying monuments today are using presentism only as an excuse. Their actual purpose is to eliminate markers of a social order that they have judged to be irredeemably flawed so that they can usher in a their Utopian order. They don't really care that Lincoln didn't do enough for the cause of black Americans or that Jefferson owned slaves. They want to discredit and erase the foundational myths of America in the belief that they can bring about something better. What chance does their cause have of actually producing a superior social order? By their fruits ye shall know them.
