Sen Lee's mistake was to use the political phrase, "cancel culture". In this time of divisive, hate-filled power struggle, words no longer mean what any normal person would think at first reading. He used a buzz word. We clearly have mob supporters in the Senate and some who, without thought or hesitation, will oppose any statement from a member of the opposing party. We are in desperate need of term limits and leaders who are honest supporters of the founding principles of the United States.

Maurine Jensen ProctorJuly 9, 2020

Annette K, Let me explain how this works. Since on this kind of non-binding resolution it takes unanimous consent to pass, all it takes is one senator to scuttle it. The Republicans were all on board with this resolution, but not all of the Democrats, Sen. Menendez came to the floor of the Senate to voice his complaints and there were rumblings that other Senate Democrats felt the same. It isn't correct that all of the other Senators, Democrats and Republicans were against this resolution against mob violence.

Bonnie Hart MurrayJuly 9, 2020

I am grateful to have a patriot like Mike Lee in our Senate. The things that are happening in our country are shocking. We have two or three generations who have not been taught correct principles in our schools. It may be too late, but I hope and pray for a Pathway program designed for grades 8-12, (it already exists for grades 9-12) where our children can learn the truth about our divinely inspired Constitution, where they can go to our church buildings and associate with their peers. Non-members could also possibly attend if they would sign an honor code, upholding certain good and true values. The things that are being taught in our public schools in sex education courses, and in social studies are shocking and evil. Freedom is always just one generation away from being lost.

Kathy GivensJuly 8, 2020

I love Mike Lee and have watched him year after year consistently, courageously, and sometimes seemingly alone stand for truth and the constitution and let the chips fall where they may. We need many more Americans (including ourselves) like him...people of courage and willing to die for truth if need be. Thank you Senator Lee.

It is so scary and hard to believe that not one senator, Democrat or Republican, would not agree with Senator Lee's resolution. Mobs are destroying our cities, killing innocent people, breaking law after law and the Senate does nothing. What are we paying them for? They are only interested in the retention of their seats of "power" What was it Joseph Smith said about power? Senators can be elected for term after term and accomplish little to benefit the nation. Corruption reigns rampant and destruction of this great nation looms. The 2nd coming must not be too far distant. Grateful for our knowledge of the gospel to get us through all satan's plans.

It is now the time that citizens, assertively and firmly must stand up and remind their elected leaders that we are still a government by the people and for the people. The time for idly sitting watching is over. With the forced lockdown this has given us added opportunity to use social media to let our elected officials know that it is the citizen, not the political party, the citizen, not campaign coffers, the citizen not blackmailed politicians, who govern and not an elite faction that does not represent the majority. Senator Lee cannot do this alone.............. Nor can Senator Romney. Principled senators need our support now, more than ever.

Neal ChristensenJuly 7, 2020

The phrase "ripening for destruction" comes to mind.

Carolyn HuntJuly 7, 2020

I so agree, Thank you Mike Lee. I am afraid the day of those willing to stand up for what is right is slim to nothing.

Dr. HJuly 7, 2020

Politics by its very nature involves compromises. Though not personally a fan of President Trump, what is the alternative? A favorite quote: "Those who have regard for the law or sausages should watch neither being made." I enjoy Senator Lee's carefully thought out comments and positions and his willingness to abide by the principals I embrace. I wish Senator Romney was as consistent!

Ryan KatusJuly 6, 2020

I think the day of the gentile is over in the US. The Book of Mormon says that when the gentiles have reached a stage of unrighteousness that is great enough, the Lord will remember his promises to the Lamanites. It will be interesting to see how the Lamanites repay all the experiences they've received from the gentiles in the last 500 years.

Maryann TaylorJuly 6, 2020

It is incomprehensible to me that ANYONE in the Senate would withhold support from Senator Lee on the issue of condemning mob violence. It is just one more startling evidence of the growing outright evil that exists in the Democrat party. There are no "shades of gray" on this issue. If we cannot unite in condemning mob violence, we are in very serious trouble.

JaneJuly 6, 2020

Thank you Senator Lee for speaking up. The time has come to speak out against violence. Hopefully other leaders will do the same. Silence does not make America strong!

Marilyn GrahamJuly 6, 2020

Black or White doesn't matter. It is the character of a person that speaks for itself, regardless of color. I love my black and white citizens and friends who stand up for justice, kindness, good neighbors, citizenship, etc. and I deplore those who riot, steal, murder, rape, ruin other people's property, etc. no matter what their excuse happens to be. Thank you Senator Lee for standing up for justice and accountability.

Robert StarlingJuly 6, 2020

To KJB - Analysis of video of the riots shows that 6 out of 8 of the "peaceful protesters" who burn, loot, occupy, and beat up innocent civilians are **white**. They are radical agitators (mostly from out of town or out of state) using a "black" cause as an excuse to advance their Marxist-inspired anarchy in their attempts to destroy America. God bless Senator Lee and President Trump for calling it like it is! Now lets see if our politicians can get a spine and back them up!

Jo AnnJuly 6, 2020

Right On, Spot On Sir. I applaud you for Your Strong speech. Wake up America.

Gail BJuly 6, 2020

I’m sorry Alec but Romney doesn’t STAND for anything! Though I originally voted for him he has unfortunately proved to be a self-serving two-faced, coward in Congress. Andrew C is right about him. BRAVO to Sen. Lee, however this article is so revealing. The senate is too corrupt to do anything right and when the left has the majority nothing right will happen! I’m afraid this is the beginning of the end......Another civil war over rather to start over as the liberals want to or get back to our Godly founding principles! The chaos and disrespect for law and order pretty much tells you which side will win; there is no going back!! They will win until the Lord intervenes......in the Second Coming!

Maggie HarlineJuly 6, 2020

As always thank you for standing up and speaking out ! I hope there will be plan to create change for this issue.

Maurine Jensen ProctorJuly 6, 2020

Violence by any ethnic group must be condemned.

Maurine Jensen ProctorJuly 6, 2020

Alec, Actually the ads that come up on Meridian are from Google and reflect what you have been viewing. They don’t reflect us.

EdJuly 6, 2020

Good for sen Lee for trying. Shame on all the rest of them.

Carol AnnJuly 6, 2020

Thank you, Senator Lee, for talking strong common sense? Where are the listening ears? I pray every day that God will heal and bless this great nation. It needs to not only come from our citizenry, yet from our halls of Congress. "Is there not so great a cause" as freedom and liberty in our land? Partisan opinions should not be an option when we see lawlessness, violence, and murder on our streets! This is a call for decency, law, and order in our country. We need to keep the American Covenant with God!

Annie LouJuly 6, 2020

I have waited endlessly to hear even one leader of this nation come out against the anarchy in the streets of American cities. Bullies are now running America! Anti-everything good is running the Congress. The one good thing I have heard beyond Senator Lee's impassioned plea for law and order or pay the consequences, is Pres. Trump's oratory from Mount Rushmore on July 4th. I wanted to stand up and cheer for Sen. Lee AND the President for finally speaking out and speaking up for what 90% of America is feeling. We know full well what these mobs are trying to do - we have seen it coming for years. I personally will be putting my limited money where my feelings are and that includes supporting out of state senators and representatives as well as my own who support the American Constitution, law of the land, and Declaration of Independence. Thank you Senator Lee. And thanks to the President for having the courage to speak out and take action.

Alec AndrusJuly 6, 2020

It is instructive that when I tried to post a comment, an ad for Trump for President popped up. Senator Lee took the unfortunate position of doubling down on the labeling of very principled protesters as rioters. Throwing the baby out with the bath water ,he looked beyond the mark. Institutional racism by a militarized police system is antithetical to our nation’s values and has not provided equity or respect to many of God’s beloved children. I choose to stand with Senator Romney who is working to unite NOT to support the divisive practices of the Republican Party toadies who have sold their soul to Trump.

Duane BoyceJuly 6, 2020

Amen. I see nothing to disagree with in Senator Lee's comments. In this atmosphere, they exhibit courage and I hope more public figures will follow the same course. Silence neither impresses nor helps.

Andrew J CurrieJuly 6, 2020

We already know that Liberals in Congress will never condemn what is going on. And we've always known Republicans will stay silent as long as possible so they don't risk losing a voter. It's time for Americans to finally admit that elected officials are not looking out for our safety and benefit. Congress's number one concern by far is getting re-elected. Just as Democrats "know" they have the black-American vote 'in the bag', Republicans know they have Conservatives 'in the bag'. They don't fear Conservatives are going to vote for a Democrat, so why worry--Mitt Romney is living proof!

RobertJuly 6, 2020

The soul of America is being destroyed. It no longer has a history. It no longer has guiding principles that are followed by its citizenry. The American people seem no longer to care. Our elected officials take steps to dehumanize it; to challenge the very concept of freedom. They allow, even encourage, the mobs to run rampant over the rights of others. And we the American people sit back and watch it happen, then exercise our right to vote and put the same people, who are creating this chaos, back in charge. As this unfolds before our very eyes, we sit back and say: “this is America. It can’t happen to us”. The “woke” society has an agenda to destroy America as we know it. True Americans, patriots, better form their “wake up” movement before it is to late. If not, God help us!

SheilaJuly 6, 2020

We are blessed to have such a statesman in the Senate. He is doing the peoples work and trying to save our Constitution as it is being shredded by the tyrants in Washington that bow to the misguided few. Let us pray America can gain a spine like Senator Lee and bring back sense and sensibility to Congress for the good of America. God Bless Senator Lee

KJBJuly 6, 2020

Where was Meridian's outrage when protesters were waving guns outside of state capitols and even preventing the Michigan legislature from being able to function? Oh, that's right, those ones were white...

Frank MerrillJuly 6, 2020

Thank you, senator Lee, for putting a voice to our feelings. There are reasons why the Book of Mormon tells us about people like Captain Moroni and also about Amalikiah.
