Thank you for the article. Having had many witnesses which are very real, it is easy to let them fade into the darkness with all the trials of life. The guiding light of prophets and apostles with the touch of witness from the Holy Ghost of out Lord and Savior will see us through.

I think there was even more to Zacharias' story. His questioning of the angel echoed Abraham and Sarah's doubt when told she would bear a child in their old age. As a priest, Zacharias would have been very conversant with that ancient scriptural reference and its clear call to belief in the Lord and His power to do His will. Yet, he still doubted. Later, after his experience, he may have had a 'face palm' moment when he remembered Abraham's story. What Zacharias' experience tells me is that, while we may know intellectually that God is all-powerful, our first response as fallen and stiff-necked mortals is to say "No way!". All the scripture and study in the world will not teach us if we don't first acknowledge the most important point in them: God can do it. No matter what it is, or what we are, He can, and will, accomplish His purposes. Nothing else is more important to Him. His work is to teach us to be like Him, and He will move heaven and earth to do that. Our most important work is to learn to trust Him, to believe what He says, and to do, what seems to us, the impossible. To have the faith likened to a mustard seed.

Elder Boyd K. Packer counseled, “Each of us must accommodate the mixture of reason and revelation in our lives. The gospel not only permits but requires it. An individual who concentrates on either side solely and alone will lose both balance and perspective.” Other General Authorities also make this point.

Thank you so much, Darla, for another enlightening and beautiful article. We live in a day where we need to hold onto our faith in Jesus Christ with all our hearts and might. Even the very elect, in some cases, are being deceived and losing their faith. I pray they will come back and open their hearts to receive the light and love of the Lord.
