A short time ago I talked to a young couple about to be married. I mentioned that after 40 years of marriage I could tell them one of the secrets to a successful marriage; “You have to learn to tolerate each other.” They looked at me strangely so I explained. Each of them will do things that irritate the other one. They each need to learn to tolerate those things. My wife and I are not “soul mates.” We are not “perfect for each other.” Our marriage works because we tolerate those things about each other that we cannot change.
