When a young child is learning to walk, falling down is a part of the process. No one chastises the child or points out his incompetence for succumbing to the law of gravity. Quite the opposite. Parents, loved ones and even strangers offer encouragement and positive motivation for the child to continue to increase in strength and try repeatedly to take those first steps independent and unassisted.

As He walked those narrow Capernaum streets, the people surrounded and engulfed him, each of them with needs, longing, pain, curiosity, wonder . . . and one of them, a woman, with an issue of blood of twelve years duration. This timid, terrified woman offers us an excellent opportunity to reflect upon the ways in which we may complicate this matter of taking the Test. Her malady is a metaphor, perhaps for the whole human family.
Many in today’s sophisticated society compartmentalize their approach to life, pitting religion against the intellect, creating a cultural clash between secularism and spirituality. In our world it’s either Athens or Jerusalem. And many falsely assume that “reason” and “revelation” are mutually exclusive—meaning, that religion and the things of the Spirit have no place in the public square. But the Prophet Joseph Smith learned early on that he could obtain both scholarly wisdom, as well as eternal truth, by combining intellectual effort with spirituality.
Natural disasters do happen. Hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, tornadoes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and floods destroy property and can cost the lives and health of those in their path. A household inventory will move you to the front of the line when applying for government aid or filing an insurance claim. Instead of waiting years to rebuild a home inventory can move the process along so you can be resettled in a much shorter time.
The end of the semester was busy with students complaining about their grades and wanting to know if there was any way they could make up for their lack of diligence during the semester. I was feeling quite tired and sat down in my office chair to rest.
That was when I noticed an envelope that had been slipped under my door. I picked it up, opened it, and a letter fell out. I started to read.
As a culture, we tend to focus on how important adult influence is in the lives of children, how much they depend on us, and how challenging that dependence can be. We say almost nothing about how much we need and depend on them. Yet an understanding of what children do for us is central to any conception of how we can thrive as a civilization. In fact, we may need children even more than they need us.
