No, you would not have made lousy pioneers then because things were simpler. The difference is that you are still a pioneer but now, in addition to the natural dangers of the wild, you also have to navigate through the traps set by men along the way. They are not looking for beaver anymore though it is the same principal. Trap beaver, sell to people for money. Now its trap people, convince them they have a need for a thing, take their money. The unrest of the comic strip is directly related to this fact.
