A variety-filled month of ten Temple Square performances is scheduled for March 2004. The performances are free and open to the public and all start at 7:30 p.m. The concerts are a gift to the community from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Reflecting concert protocol, children under eight are encouraged to visit other venues.
Friday, March 5—Outstanding Israeli pianist Albert Mamriev will perform in the Assembly Hall. He will be performing works by Chopin, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Liszt, and Brahms. Born in Russia, Mamriev studied at the Moscow Central Music School and at the Tchaikowsky Conservatory before immigrating to Israel where he has performed with major Israeli symphonies.
Saturday, March 6—The BYU Concert Choir, under the direction of Rosalind Hall, will sing in the Assembly Hall and present a program emphasizing themes of Easter, inspirational uplift, spring, traditional choral favorites, and ending with a tribute to Moses Hogan.
Wednesday, March 10—The Utah Music Teachers Association Concerto Winners’ Recital, with entrants from throughout Utah, will be presented in the Assembly Hall.
Friday, March 12—The Orchestra of Sandy City, directed by Joel Rosenberg, will perform in the Assembly Hall, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 in A Major, Op. 92; and excerpts from Strauss’ Der Rosenkavalier. Soloists will be Ana Mihanovie, Clara Hurtado, Megan Phillips Newman, and Heath Sorenson.
Saturday, March 13—The Salt Lake Symphonic Winds, a community concert band under the direction of Scott Hagen, will perform in the Assembly Hall works by Shostakovich, Jacob, Hesketh, Whitacre, Respighi, and Sousa, among others. Hagen is director of bands at the University of Utah.
Friday, March 19—The BYU Singers, directed by Ronald Staheli, will perform in the Assembly Hall selections from their 2004 concert repertoire. Staheli is coordinator of the choral and conducting division and director of graduate studies in choral music at Brigham Young University.
Saturday, March 20—The Orchestra at Temple Square, directed by principal guest conductor Igor Gruppman, will perform in the Tabernacle. For free tickets call 801-240-0080.
Wednesday, March 24—The Utah Federation of Music Clubs Honors Piano Recital will be presented in the Assembly Hall.
Friday, March 26—Salt Lake Community College Combined Choirs, under the direction of Lyle Archibald, will present a spring concert in the Assembly Hall.
Wednesday, March 31—The Utah Valley State College Chamber Choir of some 30 singers, directed by Dyanne Riley, will sing in the Assembly Hall a program of sacred Latin texts, folk, gypsy, and ethnic songs, and songs of singing.
