We actually start a topic today that does not fill me with dread. Let’s hope the non-contentiousness of the subject doesn’t mean we won’t get any responses.

The question is a simple one. A Meridian reader wants to know how to get genealogical information from hostile family members. Here is what she had to say:

I’ve been wondering how other Saints handle the issue of doing the temple ordinances for ancestors when the closest direct-line living relative is not favorably inclined and a nonmember. I’ve opted to respect the wishes of the living relative and reserved part of the work until I become next in line. Other LDS family members have done some of the work blissfully unaware of the opposition.

This is a sticky wicket for me even after many prayers. Ack! It may be right in front of my nose, but I haven’t found a definitive answer on the Church site.

Now there’s an answer a lot of us can use! There are several aspects of the question – from getting genealogical information at all to actually doing temple ordinances.

I know there are a lot of family history buffs out there. The question is, do you ever leave your family history sites long enough to read Circle of Sisters?

If any of you have any help for Sister in Maine, please send it in. You can help her as well as a whole passel of other Meridian readers. Think of this as a way you can participate in family history, even though it’s for a family other than your own!

Please send responses to Me**************@ao*.com. Put something in the subject line that will let me know your letter isn’t spam. And be sure to sign your letter the way you want it signed. But most important – just send your response. A nervous Mainer is hoping to hear from you.

Until next week – Kathy

In different hours, a man represents each of several of his ancestors, as if there were seven or eight of us rolled up in each man’s skin – seven or eight ancestors at least – and they constitute the variety of notes for that new piece of music which his life is.
