“Wo unto them that turn aside the just for a thing of naught and revile against that which is good, and say that it is of no worth! For the day shall come that the Lord God will speedily visit the inhabitants of the earth; and in that day that they are fully ripe in iniquity they shall perish.” (2 Nephi 28:16)
Special thanks to my Uncle Richard L. Millett for his insight that Nephi’s words in 2 Nephi 27:1-2 clearly and succinctly describe today’s world situation.
“And behold the book shall be sealed; and in the book shall be a revelation from God, from the beginning of the world to the ending thereof.”
“But the words which are sealed he shall not deliver, neither shall he deliver the book. For the book shall be sealed by the power of God, and the revelation which was sealed shall be kept in the book until the own due time of the Lord, that they may come forth; for behold, they reveal all things from the foundation of the world unto the end thereof.”
“And the day cometh that the words of the book which were sealed shall be read upon the house tops; and they shall be read by the power of Christ; and all things shall be revealed unto the children of men which ever have been among the children of men, and which ever will be even unto the end of the earth.”
“Wherefore, when thou hast read the words which I have commanded thee, and obtained the witnesses which I have promised unto thee, then shalt thou seal up the book again, and hide it up unto me, that I may preserve the words which thou hast not read, until I shall see fit in mine own wisdom to reveal all things unto the children of men.”

“For behold, the language which ye shall write I have confounded; wherefore I will cause in my own due time that these stones shall magnify to the eyes of men these things which ye shall write. And when the Lord had said these words, he showed unto the brother of Jared all the inhabitants of the earth which had been, and also all that would be; and he withheld them not from his sight, even unto the ends of the earth. For he had said unto him in times before, that if he would believe in him that he could show unto him all things-it should be shown unto him; therefore the Lord could not withhold anything from him, for he knew that the Lord could show him all things. And the Lord said unto him: Write these things and seal them up; and I will show them in mine own due time unto the children of men. And it came to pass that the Lord commanded him that he should seal up the two stones which he had received, and show them not, until the Lord should show them unto the children of men.” (Ether 3:24-28)

“Mormon continued his abridgment, selecting from the large plates, paraphrasing, and often adding his own comments, extending the account down to his time. Anticipating death, he passed the plates to his son Moroni. Over the next few decades, Moroni wandered alone, making additions to his father’s record, including two chapters now included in a book previously abridged by his father (Morm. 7-8) and an account of the jaredites that he had abridged from the twenty-four gold plates of Ether. He also copied an extensive vision of the last days that had been recorded by an early Jaredite prophet, the brother of jared, and which Moroni was commanded to seal (Ether 4:4-5). He also added brief notes on church rituals (Moro. 1-6), a sermon and two letters from his father (Moro. 7-9), and an exhortation to future readers (Moro. 10). Finally, Moroni took this somewhat heterogeneous collection of records-the plates of Mormon, the small plates of Nephi, his abridgment of the plates of Ether, and the sealed portion containing the vision of the Brother of Jared-and buried them in the earth. About 1,400 years later, in 1823, Moroni, now resurrected, appeared to the Prophet Joseph Smith and revealed the location of these records. The plates of Mormon, which, except for the sealed portion, were subsequently translated by Joseph Smith, are known today as the gold plates.” [emphasis added]

Fraser Cain, “What is the Hottest Planet in the Solar System?’ Universetoday.com, June 17, 2013.
“Which one is the hottest? You might think it’s Mercury, the planet closest to the Sun. Mercury orbits at a distance of only 58 million kilometers, travelling in a blast-furnace of scorching radiation. Its temperature can skyrocket to 700 Kelvin, or 426 degrees Celsius on the sunward side. In the shadows, temperatures plunge down to 80 Kelvin, which is -173 degrees Celsius. Mercury sure is hot, but Venus is hotter. Venus is much further from the Sun, orbiting at a distance of more than 108 million kilometers. Average temperature there is a hellish 735 Kelvin, or 462 degrees Celsius hot enough to melt lead.
“Venus remains that same temperature no matter where you go on the planet. At the North Pole? 735 Kelvin. At night? 735 Kelvin. Daytime at the equator? You get the point. So, why is Venus so much hotter than Mercury, even though it’s further away from the Sun? It’s all about the atmosphere. Mercury is an airless world, not unlike the Moon. Venus, has a very thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide, which adds incredible pressure, and traps in the heat.”

“More than one-quarter of total U.
S. greenhouse gas emissions come from the transportation sector (see Figure 1), making transportation the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States after the electric power sector.”
“The vast majority of transportation emissions (95 percent) are composed of carbon dioxide (carbon dioxide), which is released during fossil fuel combustion. An additional one percent of total transportation GHG emissions come from methane (CH4) and nitrous oxides (N2O), emissions also associated with fossil fuel combustion. The leakage of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) from vehicle air conditioning systems is responsible for the remaining three percent of transportation GHG emissions. Transportation sources also emit hydrocarbons (which are ozone precursors), carbon monoxide (CO), and aerosols. These substances are not counted as greenhouse gases in transportation emissions inventories but are believed to have an indirect effect on global warming, although their impact has not been quantified with certainty.”
RPMNote: See pie chart for eight percent portion of transportation emissions for air travel and 22 percent for medium and heavy trucks. Transportation emissions comprise 27 percent of the total emissions.
It is an interesting statement to reference the 19th century in the Cosmos episode, the ending of the Little Ice Age, as the comparison point from which we have seen a warmer climate. Many of the colder climates that now can sustain agriculture have been benefited from our emerging from that colder climatic cycle. I would certainly not want to return to that colder era.
The great famine of 1315 marked the beginning of the cooling cycle that we call the Little Ice Age (1300-1870).
“Great Famine of 1315-1317,” wikipedia.org, retrieved 8/13/2014.
“The Great Famine started with bad weather in spring 1315. Universal crop failures lasted through 1316 until the summer harvest in 1317, and Europe did not fully recover until 1322. The period was marked by extreme levels of crime, disease, mass death, and even cannibalism and infanticide. The crisis had consequences for the Church, state, European society, and for future calamities to follow in the fourteenth century.”
Many think that the combination of governments and the fossil fuel industries is a combination prone to corruption and not to be trusted. Is it not also true that the combination of governments with “cap and trade” and related energy companies is an even more likely corrupt, untrustworthy and prosperity-killing combination?
Consider this report of the current situation in Portugal and how the EU has indeed become a corrupt overbearing centralized government.
“Marx Madness,” Casey Research: Personal Freedom through Financial Freedom, June 22, 2012.
“For those of you who are unfamiliar with the place, physically and meteorologically, Portugal is about as good as it gets. The weather is almost identical to Southern California, and the country has a long coastline complete with stunning (and largely empty) beaches. As with Southern California, the land is rich and supports the growing of pretty much any crop. The people are friendly and well educated, with most speaking three or even four languages (Portuguese, English, German, Spanish are fairly standard). The food is fantastic, especially the fresh seafood, prepared to perfection even when just cooked over coals in a fisherman’s shack.”
“You see, and I kid you not, every Portuguese, save one, I spoke to during my three-day visit was profoundly pessimistic, resigned to a new reality of the lack of tourists, empty hotels, failed real estate developments, the crash of the construction industry and the dearth of bank financing to fund anything. Every person I met under the age of 30 was looking to get out of the country.”
“I’ll give you a hint by relating that as a condition for inclusion in the Eurozone, functionaries in the European Commission based in Brussels required the Portuguese to retire and destroy a large percentage of their fishing fleet. As I understand it, the commissioners felt that the size of the Portuguese fleet coupled with the sea-faring nation’s long history in commercial fishing gave it an unfair advantage over other nations in the Eurozone. They also helped rationalize the demand to burn the boats by saying that the Portuguese fishermen were putting the ecosystem of the Atlantic Ocean at risk. The result of forcing the Portuguese to burn these tools for capital creation is that since joining the Eurozone in 1986, Portugal’s fish harvest has effectively been cut in half. I was told that the country is reduced to buying many of the sardines that find favor in the local cuisine from the Spanish fleet.”
“The Euro-meddling doesn’t stop with fish. The Portuguese are mandated to trash a large amount of their annual orange production lest they exceed the quotas set in Brussels. Apparently the Spanish, ever attuned to capitalize on Portugal’s mandated misfortunes, buy the unsellable excess oranges and use them to make marmalade which they then sell back to the Portuguese.”
“And even though the country (and the continent) is tight in the grips of the most dire crisis in living memory, the EU commissars are still at it. In fact, as I write, Portugal is being forced by the European Commission to kill a large percentage of its chicken population, with the slaughter to be completed over the next month. This by virtue of the ironically named EU Welfare of Laying Hens Directive, forbidding the continued use of conventional egg-laying cages. Once the chickens are destroyed, and provided the Portuguese egg farmers can ever find the capital needed to rebuild, they will have to build to the specifications of the EC Directive that requires that all laying hens must be kept in “enriched cages” providing each hen with at least 0.8 square feet of cage area, a nest-box, litter, perches and claw-shortening devices, allowing the hens to satisfy their biological and behavioral needs.”
“One Portuguese taxi driver said sourly that the economically stifling EU policies would not stop until they finished killing off the Portuguese people through starvation. He could be right. If the latest iteration of the EU Common Agricultural Policy is pushed forward, it will tie payments to farmers to environmental targets. Those targets include requiring the farmers to reserve at least 7 percent of their land for ecological purposes. In other words, if the farmers don’t decrease their output of food by 7%, they won’t be able to sell the food they produce on the other 93% of their land.”
“No matter how they spin their actions as the spawn of lofty goals and high principles, even a cursory glance reveals that the EU is now operating as a command economy one where the productive capacity of commercial enterprises, fishing and farming being just one small corner, is being directed by central planners.”
RPMNote: This example shows that virtually anything can be justified to save the planet and the environment. This report was a clear example of the tyranny of big government predicted by the founding fathers.
John Robertson, “Carbon Dioxide Feeds the World,”
“carbon dioxide is essential for life. More carbon dioxide will do much good and no harm. If we allow it to go on increasing at the current rate carbon dioxide will feed the World?s coming peak population with NO more land, seed, cultivation or water.
“We owe our very existence and the existence of every living plant and animal on the planet.
carbon dioxide provides the food for plants like wheat, rice, fruit and vegetables which are human staples plus other plants such as grass which feeds the animals who give us milk and meat or the glorious trees which give us beautiful forests plus timber, paper and many collateral benefits. carbon dioxide is a most unobtrusive substance being invisible, odorless and non-flammable. It circulates in our blood and passes through our lungs for so long as we live. Plants stop growing below 150 ppmv of carbon dioxide in the air. If that happens all animals on earth, including humans, will starve to death.”
“A study published in Feb. 2010 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has found evidence that forests in the Eastern United States are growing faster than they have in the past 225 years. The study offers a rare look at how an ecosystem is responding to climate change.”
“There was academic debate about Arrhenius’ figures but limited interest until 1981. In that year Dr James Hansen, a NASA scientist, published his PhD thesis predicting that man-made carbon dioxide threatened the earth with damaging temperature increases. He became the leading and very articulate advocate for that prediction. He focused it to say that the safe? limit for atmospheric carbon dioxide was 350 ppmv. The present level is 12% above that and rising steadily with no harm evident to date.”

Real Photos Calculated to Mislead

John P. Rafferty, “Little Ice Age,” Encyclopedia Britannica, Retrieved 8/3/2014.
“Little Ice Age (LIA), climate interval that occurred from the early 14th century through the mid-19th century, when mountain glaciers expanded at several locations, including the European Alps, New Zealand, Alaska, and the southern Andes, and mean annual temperatures across the Northern Hemisphere declined by 0.6 C (1.1 F) relative to the average temperature between 1000 and 2000 ce. The term Little Ice Age was introduced to the scientific literature by Dutch-born American geologist F.E. Matthes in 1939. Originally the phrase was used to refer to Earth’s most recent 4,000-year period of mountain-glacier expansion and retreat. Today some scientists use it to distinguish only the period 15001850, when mountain glaciers expanded to their greatest extent, but the phrase is more commonly applied to the broader period 13001850. The Little Ice Age followed the Medieval Warming Period (roughly 9001300 ce) and preceded the present period of warming that began in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.”
RPMNote: As we track temperatures coming out of the little ice age, we cannot just assume that carbon dioxide is the greatest contributor to that slight rise in temperatures. Climate is a multivariable problem and the effect of the Sun and whatever plans the Lord may have certainly will trump our current predictive theories.
David Middleton, “A Brief History of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Record-Breaking,” Watts Up With That?, December 7, 2012.
This discussion of historical levels of carbon dioxide includes estimates for earlier ages in earth’s history. Sounds like an animated technical discussion with how to interpret the research and data believed to be from thousands and millions of years ago. The problem is that this is not just an academic discussion. These arguments of facts and theories derived from those facts are now affecting EPA regulations, carbon taxes, oil and coal energy development and our electricity prices.
“Does high levels of carbon dioxide in the past contradict the warming effect of carbon dioxide?” Skeptical Science: Getting skeptical about global warming skepticism, Retrieved 8/3/2014.
This is a good post from the global warming proponent point of view and is also an animated discussion.
“In summary, we know carbon dioxide was probably very high coming into the Late Ordovician period, however the subsequent dip in carbon dioxide was brief enough not to register in the GEOCARB model, yet low enough (with the help of a dimmer sun) to trigger permanent ice-formation. Effectively it was a brief excursion to coldness during an otherwise warm era, due to a coincidence of conditions.”
John Robertson, “Carbon Dioxide Feeds the World,”
“Global Mean Carbon Dioxide Mixing Ratios (ppm) : Observations,” NASA, data from 2003 and trends extrapolated unto 2013.
SIO Mauna Loa and South Pole adjusted for global mean for recent data. Earlier data from ice cores adjusted for global mean.
David Middleton, “A Brief History of Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Record-Breaking,” Watts Up With That?, December 7, 2012.
This data and what it means has animated proponents on both sides of this debate. It is agreed that levels of carbon dioxide are believed to be much higher in the past. It is also believed that our Sun was dimmer in the past according to stellar evolution theory and may have required higher carbon dioxide levels just to stay at a comfortable temperature and not cause an ice age. As a believer in the scriptures and the Lord’s hand in all things, I trust that in His plan for the earth, the Lord is able to balance and adjust the climate appropriately as the home for his children. We should also use common sense to be good stewards of the earth that God has created for our home.
Christopher Monckton, “Satellites show no global warming for 17 years 5 months,” Watts Up With That?, February 6, 2014.
“The monthly satellite lower-troposphere temperature anomaly from Remote Sensing Systems, Inc., is now available. Taking the least-squares linear-regression trend on this dataset (the bright blue horizontal line through the dark blue data), there has now been no global warming at all for 17 years 5 months.”
RPMNote: If carbon dioxide levels are increasing as fast as it is and there are no dramatic warming trends, then there is no world-wide emergency needed to stop it. Thus, this data and how it is implemented in the models is hotly contested. This graph comes from credible data and is not an “off the wall” interpretation. Calling those like Lord Monckton “deniers” as an epithet linked to “holocaust deniers” is counterproductive and childish. It says more about those who so badly seem to want a catastrophe to happen and do not want to accept the good news that the danger has been overblown.
Anthony Watts, “Lord Monckton wins global warming debate at Oxford Union,” Mar 24, 2010.
“I’m waiting for actual photos of the event from the official photographer, but for now I’ll make do with what can be found on the Internet.
For those who don’t know, the Oxford Union is the top of the food chain for scholarly debate. This is a significant win.”
RPMNote: The methods used to measure and smooth the global temperature readings and interpret them are passionately debated by scientists. The temperature graphs range from flat temperatures in this graph to slight warming in other graphs. Here are some other opinions. But none of them has catastrophic rises in temperature. Also, none of these slightly rising temperature graphs would be out of character with the ending of the little ice age independent of the rising carbon dioxide levels.
Robert Way, “Monckton Myth #2: Temperature records, trends and El Nino,” Jan 17, 2011.
“Recently John addressed some of the issues with Christopher Monckton’s paper targeting Michael Steketee’s column in The Australian, where Monckton asserted that the oceans are not accumulating heat. John showed that when you consider the full body of evidence, it is evident that the oceans are indeed accumulating heat thereby contributing to global sea level rise. In the spirit of consulting the full body of evidence, I will address Monckton’s claims regarding temperature records, temperature trends and the intensity of 2010’s El Nino.”
“Each temperature dataset has their own individual caveats so it is difficult to assess which is the most reliable, but a purely unscientific way to look at this issue is to put all the datasets on the same baseline and to average them to create the All Method Temperature Index (AMTI). I have put all the Table 1 datasets on the 1990-2000 baseline (so we could include all) and have averaged them to create Figure 1 below.”
“Total Carbon Dioxide Emissions from the Consumption of Energy,” EIA, International Energy Statistics, 2011.
This is a great resource from the Energy Information Agency on carbon dioxide from all energy sources for the countries of the world. Note that the US and Europe are already decreasing slightly in spite of their much larger economies and populations since 1980. Further regulations on carbon dioxide will make inexpensive electricity a thing of the past and likely further seriously handicap the prosperity of the developed countries. China, meanwhile, went from 8 billion tons to 8.7 billion tons in a single year from 2010 to 2011, which will dwarf any reductions the US or Europe might make trying to get back to 1990 carbon dioxide emission levels, goals established by the UN.
A recent example of the EPA’s war on coal-fired electricity plants is the closure of three of the generators of the Four Corners Generating Station in New Mexico in 2014. We can strangle ourselves and force energy prices to skyrocket along with its effect on every sector of our economy and it will not even make a significant dent in the worldwide carbon dioxide picture nor prevent China from economic dominance in the world.
With the US and Europe combined only being about one third of the total carbon emissions, and both having become much more efficient in their energy use already over the past 30 years, how much more efficient can they get?
Ryan Randazzo, “APS closes 3 units at 4 corners power plant,” Arizona Republic, December 30, 2013.
“Three coal-fired generators that opened in the 1960s near Farmington, N.M., closed Monday as part of a $182 million plan for Arizona Public Service Co. to meet environmental regulations, the utility reported.”
John Robertson, “Carbon Dioxide Feeds the World,”
“The world?s biggest coal-fired power station is the 5,780 MW Taichung station in Taiwan. Here it is (left photo) at nearly maximum output using, as always, full stack gas scrubbing. It is producing 5,000 MW, mostly from Australian coal, which is enough to supply Sydney and Brisbane combined. No smoke is visible, 99.8% is trapped by the electrostatic precipitators. 41 million tons of carbon dioxide are emitted annually.
“This really is clean coal’ technology. However, the carbon-antis want the carbon dioxide to be removed also. That is technically very difficult and will, if it is ever achieved, be very expensive over 3 tons of carbon dioxide are produced for each ton of coal burned. Carbon dioxide going into the air does great good and no harm. In addition to producing an enormous amount of very reliable electrical power the output from this station?s stacks helps countless plants worldwide to grow better.”
Roetenks, “Clandestine Causes of Global Warming,” redstate.com, July 28, 2011.
“Natural cycles ALWAYS change climate. One of the biggest cycles is the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO). It shifts from warm to cold every 20-30 years, or on an inter-decadal time scale. This is directly related to sea surface temperature. The PDO’s temperature variance over more than 100 years can be viewed in the graph below. A common thread to PDO and climate is unmistakable. Both graphs below are from Wikipedia.”
Roy Spencer, Ph.D., “2000 Years of Global Temperatures,” retrieved 8/4/2014.
“This graph shows the average of 18 non-tree ring proxies of temperature from 12 locations around the Northern Hemisphere, published by Craig Loehle in 2007, and later revised in 2008. It clearly shows that natural climate variability happens, and these proxies coincide with known events in human history.”
Roy Spencer, “Global Warming: Reasons for Optimism,” 2008.
“The Big Picture
We HAVE experienced global warming.
(There are no “global warming deniers.”)
But WHY has it warmed?
Mostly Mankind? or
1. Global warming HAS occurred over the last 150 years or sojust like it has occurred before.
2. It is NOT known with any level of certainty how much of the warming is manmade versus natural
3. Climate models produce too much warming, probably because researchers confuse cause and effect when
analyzing natural climate variability.”
Another good site to look at is isthereglobalcooling.com. that also looks at longer time periods that show the fluctuations in the climate.
“As you are well aware there is a huge effort around the globe to counter the alleged impact of mankind on the world’s climate. If in fact mankind will cause the seas to rise appreciably by causing carbon dioxide induced global warming then certainly let’s do something about it. But, what if global warming is not what they say it is? What if the world’s temperature is headed in the opposite direction? Global temperatures increased for twenty years from the late 1970s to the late 1990s but have either stopped warming or have begun to cool in the last seventeen years.
The global warming and subsequent cooling were even predictable due to hundreds of years of historical trends and observation of the impact of variations in solar activity and ocean cycles on global temperatures.
